Since its founding in 1977, the company is dedicated to the works of a single choreographer: Bors Eifman (born in Sibiria in 19946), who studied choreography at the Leningrad Conservatory. From the beginning, their productions gained international attention – on each side of the iron curtain. Untill now the repertoire counts more than 40 productions, highly acclaimed and honoured by numerous national and international awards.

By the early 1980s, the Eifman Ballet had already created an individual and unmistakable repertoire, primarily through an engagement with literary material in the form of narrative ballets such as The Idiot, Twelfth Night, and The Master and Margarita. The company demonstrated its intellectual curiosity and virtuoso technique with skillful adaptations of new works and subjects for dance. Today the Eifman Ballet St. Petersburg performs throughout the world. The company is known and loved for works such as Tchaikovsky, Red Giselle, Russian Hamlet, Anna Karenina, Onegin, Rodin, and Beyond Sin (based on The Brothers Karamazov by Dostoyevski).

The year 2011 marked the beginning of a new period for the company when the government of St. Petersburg agreed to establish the Boris Eifman Dance Academy, a project originally initiated by the choreographer himself. The academy accepted its first students in September 2013. Another exciting project will be realized in the near future. The Boris Eifman Dance Palace is envisioned as a center for dance in all its forms and variety. This will be a further step toward the realization of Boris Eifman’s artistic mission: the devel-opment of new choreographic forms and means of expression for the 21st century based on the rich traditions of Russian ballet and psychological theater.
