Thr Perm Ballet is one of Russia’s five leading dance companies. As well as the Bolshoi Theater in Moscow and the Marinsky Theater in St. Petersburg, the Perm Ballet is a significant influence in Russia’s cultural life. Most of the more than 80 dancers were trained at the company’s own ballet school, which is dedicated to the preservation and further development of the classical St. Petersburg tradition. Alexy Miroshnichenko has been Artistic Director and Principal Choreographer of the Perm Ballet since 2009. He studied at the Waganowa Academy and worked in a number of companies, including the Marinsky Ballet.

The Perm Ballet cultivates a close collaboration and artistic dialogue with the Marinsky Theater and copyright heirs throughout the world to preserve the works of the great choreographers. The company’s repertoire also includes works by modern, classical modern, and contemporary choreographers such as Jerome Robbins, Jiri Kylián, William Forsythe, Kenneth MacMillan, Frederick Ashton, Douglas Lee, and George Balanchine. The works of George Balanchine in particular are an essential element of the Perm Ballet’s repertoire. Without them, the company in its present form would be unthinkable, just as ballet itself in the 20th and 21st centuries is unthinkable without Balanchine. The Perm Ballet was one of the first companies to present Balanchine’s works in Russia after 1990 and has performed twelve of his choreographies.
In 2003, the company received the Golden Mask award for its interpretation of “Ballet Imperial”. Three years later, Dance Europe magazine named the Perm Ballet “Best Company of the Year” and Alexy Miroshnichenko “Best Choreographer of the Year”.
